The LARABII project’s Principal Investigator, Professor Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, was interviewed by Rás 2’s Morgunútvarpið on Wednesday 18 May.
The interview was broadcast on the first morning of LARABII’s inaugural conference, The politics of abortion in Iceland, Ireland & Northern Ireland, shortly before proceedings commenced.
In her remarks to Morgunútvarpið, Silja Bára described the ongoing international backlash against reproductive rights that has prompted the LARABII project. Examples of the backlash, such as the proposed removal of the federally-protected right to abortion in the United States, stand in stark contrast to recent progress on expanding reproductive rights in Iceland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. LARABII’s conference brought together experts on abortion politics in Iceland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Canada, and the United States to discuss the differing scenarios in each country and how the backlash against reproductive rights may be resisted.
The keynote panel of the conference, featuring politicians and academics from Iceland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, was free to attend. The audience featured a wide range of activists, academics, journalists, and other members of the public.
The interview with Silja Bára was broadcast at about 46 minutes into the 18 May episode of Morgunútvarpið. You can listen to the clip (in Icelandic) on the RÚV website.
