Fréttablaðið SCOTUS coverage: Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir comments on US Supreme Court leak

According to the US political news outlet Politico, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) intends to strike down the 1973 ruling on the Roe vs. Wade case. The landmark judgment affirmed an effective federal constitutional right to abortion on the basis of the right to privacy. Politico received a leaked draft opinion indicating that SCOTUS may overturn Roe vs. Wade as early as next month, removing the federal status of abortion rights in the US and allowing individual state legislatures a free hand to pass their own laws. Pro-choice activists are deeply concerned that the overturning of Roe vs. Wade would lead to abortion being heavily restricted or banned outright in up to 26 states.

Principal Investigator of the LARABII project, Professor Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, featured extensively in Fréttablaðið‘s coverage of the matter yesterday. The article examines the leak from a number of angles, including the political context of the leak itself and the possible ramifications of reproductive rights in America.
